One of my favorite cars at SEMA 2014 was Steve Strope’s gorgeous 1967 Ford Fairlane. The blue and gold color combination was simply stunning. I had a very similar reaction at SEMA 2015 when I came across this 1961 Ford Sunliner at the Custom Auto Sound booth. What can I say: I think I have a thing for Sixties Fords in blue!
The Sunliner was Ford’s convertible cruiser. Based on the Galaxie chassis, it was classified as a full-size car in 1961 and was an intermediate-size car for 1962-64. This Sunliner features twin “afterburner style” round taillamps that are very space age. With its massive 119-inch wheelbase and powerful V8 engine, this car was a real head-turner.
The gang over at Hollywood Hot Rods in Burbank, CA have transformed this Sunliner from a Sunday cruiser into a pro-touring G-machine! The car rides on a Roadster Shop chassis with a Revo front suspension package and Afco coilovers in the rear. Road-holding prowess comes from the Fury-style wheels by Billet Specialities which measure 18×9 up front and 20×10 in the rear. Finally, a set of Superlite 6-piston calipers with 14″ rotors help bring things to a safe stop.
It sounds like the handling of this car is completely nailed. But, what about power? Under the hood is a Ford Performance 427 small block crate motor that has been boosted up to 648 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 593 lb-ft of torque at 4,900 rpm. What’s the secret? How about a pair of TorqStorm superchargers? Yep, this twin-supercharged car will have no trouble breaking the tires lookse and spanking competitors all over the place.
Power flows through a Hughes Performance 4L80E transmission and the 9-inch rear end to the 9-inch rear end and Dynotech drive shaft.
Of course, my favorite feature is the beautiful blue paint job, which is a 2011 Ford color called SZ Blue Flame. This car also uses a light gunmetal grey in the engine bay. From start to finish, this car is absolutely gorgeous and I wouldn’t change a thing about it. This car expertly combines big power with big styling, and it all works together!
