Gil Losi’s 1961 Impala – ‘Under PreSSure’

There is an old saying that “The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.” That’s particularly true for the owner of this 1961 Chevrolet Impala, Mr. Gil Losi.

Back in the 1980s, Gil started a company called Team Losi. Their family business grew to become a dominant player in the R/C car industry during the boom years of the 1980s and 1990s. Gil later sold the business to Horizon Hobby, but he’s not through playing with cars. These days, he’s tinkering with full size ones!

Gil’s latest toy was built by Steve Cook Creations in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I saw it on display at the Meguiar’s booth at SEMA 2013.

What we have here is a 1961 Chevrolet Impala that’s putting down some serious power. Under the hood is a Mike Moran 540ci big block V8 fed by twin 80mm Garrett turbochargers. The car makes a staggering 2,015 horsepower with 26.1 pounds of boost! Now you know why he calls it “Under Pressure!”

The engine transfers its massive power through a custom 4L80E automatic transmission and a Detroit Locker 9-inch rear end. There’s also an aluminum radiator and intercooler from Ron Davis to help keep things cool.

With this much power, you need to strengthen the rest of the car to keep it from tearing itself apart. Gil’s Impala has been dropped on to an Art Morrison chassis with a RidePro E3 suspension from RideTech. The car rides on a set of 18″ front and 20″ rear wheels from Billet Specialties, which are wrapped in Yokohama Advan Sport tires. A set of Baer 14″ disc brakes with 6-piston calipers helps bring the full size car to a stop.

The interior is no less impressive, with a dashboard from a 1959 Chevrolet that was redone by Gabe’s Street Rod Custom Interiors in San Bernardino. On the exterior, the DuPont triple-black paint job looked a mile deep and had an absolutely flawless shine.

This car has something for everyone – big power, great handling, and classic styling. It’s one toy I wouldn’t mind having in my own garage!
