Ringbrothers 1964 Ford Fairlane 500 “Afterburner”

There are a lot of hot rod shops all around the country that build show cars for SEMA, but none of them grab attention quite like the Ringbrothers. Based in Spring Green, Wisconsin, Ringbrothers was founded by brothers Mike and Jim Ring.

They’ve made a name for themselves as world-class car builders, and I had the priviledge of checking out one of their creations at the 2013 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. This is their take on a 1964 Ford Fairlane 500, which they have nicknamed “Afterburner.”

This car was from a time when Americans were immensely excited about rockets, satellites, and space exploration. This fascination permeated nearly every aspect of American culture, and even influenced the cars of the day. Capitalizing on the space craze, Ford designers gave the Fairlane 500 a distinctive set of round taillamps that look a lot like the afterburners of a jet engine.

The Ringbrothers have extensively modified this car, which was on display at the Barrett-Jackson booth. Like their other builds, this car seamlessly blends classic Mustang styling with modern technology.

Think of the typical image of a hot rodder working in his garage in a grease-stained shirt, smoking a cigarette and welding parts from anything and everything on to his car, with no concern for safety or practicality or anything other than raw speed. These guys are changing that image.  Parts are custom-fabricated using CNC machining to ensure a precise fit. The fit and finish of everything looks better than OE. This car is a world-class build, and it really looks spectacular up close.

This car sold for $247,500 at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale in January 2014.
