SEMA 2012: Kombat T98 Luxury Armored SUV

Have you ever thought about quitting your day job and becoming a supervillain? If so, you’re going to need a vehicle every bit as crazy as you are. That vehicle is the Kombat T98.

If an armored Mercedes or BMW is too subtle for your tastes, the Kombat T98 will surely stand out. It is a luxury armored SUV which meets the needs of your average arms dealer, supervillain, or third-world dictator.

So let’s get right to the good stuff and talk about armor. The vehicle’s ballistic resistance is rated according to European CEN standards, where B1 is the lowest level of protection and B7 is the highest.

Generally, a vehicle with a higher rating is better protected. A B6 rating may be able to withstand a larger caliber bullet than a vehicle with a B2 rating. The ratings are determined by the thickness or the strength of the armor steel used.

The Kombat T98 is available in four different configurations: light armor, base armor, heavy armor, and Special.

  • Light: reinforced crew compartment, armor level B2/B3 equivalent
  • Base: full armored crew compartment with dual flooring protection, armor level B6 equivalent
  • Heavy: full armored crew compartment with dual flooring protection, armor level B7 equivalent
  • Special: 3/4 level STANAG NATO limited add-on Explosion absorbing protection, composite steel-ceramic-steel full welded monocoque body.

With this level of ballistic protection, you should be able to escape the authorities unharmed and get back to making evil plans.

Now, you might be thinking that all of the heavy armor will slow down the vehicle. Fortunately the T98 is available with a 6.0L V8 flex-fuel gas engine or a 6.6L V8 diesel engine. The gas engine makes 360 HP and 380 lb-ft of torque, while the diesel makes 397 HP and 765 lb-ft of torque. The extra power will come in handy since the T98 has seating for yourself and six hostages passengers in the wagon version.

Both engines come with a 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Unlike other armored vehicles, the Kombat T98 is also engineered for high speed getaways. With a top speed of 110 mph, it should be no trouble to outrun bands of rebels in Toyota Land Cruisers.

The Kombat T98 also has a heavy-duty suspension, off road tires, a limited slip differential, and part-time four wheel drive with automatic locking hubs. This is a vehicle that can go anywhere, such as giving chase through crowded city streets, driving up on the sidewalk, and knocking over fruit carts (why is there always a fruit cart?).

By now you’ve got a good idea of the capabilities of the T98. Let’s take a moment to talk about the luxury part.

Inside, you’ll find 8-way powered leather bucket seats up front and a split folding leather bench seat in the rear. There lengthy list of optional equipment has items such as wool carpeting, a high-end Bose sound system, built-in TV monitors, GPS navigation with Bluetooth, and even a 5-camera surveillance system!

If this sounds like the perfect vehicle for your daily commute to and from your subterranean fortress, you had better be prepared to pay up. The T98 has a base price of $248,000 USD. Each vehicle is 100% hand built in St. Petersburg and takes 3 to 6 months to complete.
