Barrett-Jackson 2022: 2020 Hertz Hendrick Camaro ZL1

Way back in 1966, Carroll Shelby partnered with rental car company Hertz Corporation for a special promotion. Hertz would order 1,000 Shelby GT350 vehicles and make them available for rent. These special edition cars featured black paint with gold stripes and GT350H badging. The campaign was advertised as “Rent-a-Racer” and was very successful.

The popularity of the original program has endured over the years, and has resulted in Hertz doing a number of re-boots and similar offerings featuring newer Shelby Mustangs, the Chevrolet Corvette, and most recently, the Chevrolet Camaro.

Hertz revived the Rent-A-Racer program in 2006, 2007, and 2016 with customized Mustang vehicles available for rent at select locations throughout the United States. Hertz also partnered with Chevrolet to produce a special “Hertz edition” Corvette ZHZ in 2008, 2009, and 2018.
2020 saw the debut of the first ever Hertz edition Camaro. These vehicles, developed in partnership with Hendrick Motorsports, take the “Rent-A-Racer” concept to a whole new level. A total of 224 units were built, with two versions. One model based on the Camaro SS is equipped with the 6.2-liter V8 engine and produces 480 horsepower. The other version is based on the Camaro ZL1 and features a Callaway supercharged 6.2-liter V8 producing 750 horsepower! Both cars wear yellow stripes over gloss black paint.
One of these special Hendrick Motorsports #24 / Hertz / Camaro ZL1 models was recently offered for sale at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale 2022 auction. The 650-horsepower Camaro ZL1 is an excellent starting platform to build a special car.

The Camaro’s stock supercharger was upgraded to a Callaway Gen3 supercharger with triple-cooled intercooler, boosting power output to 750 horsepower. To make room for the new supercharger, a hand-built carbon fiber hood insert was designed and manufactured by Hendrick Motorsports. The car is production number #012 according to a data plate under the hood.

Additional modifications include a Hertz / Hendrick Motorsports graphics package with the Hendrick Motorsports #24 logo, Forgeline wheels with #24 center caps over Hertz yellow painted brake calipers. Continuing the theme, the car features Hertz Yellow door inserts, lighted door sills with the Hertz logo, William Byron’s signature and the #24 logo, as well as #24 floor mats.
The car sold for $104,500 (including buyer’s premium) at the 2022 Scottsdale auction and shows just 6,600 miles on the odometer. That’s dangerously close to COPO Camaro money, for a car that can actually be registered and driven on the street. Although six figures sounds like a lot for a Camaro, I think it is warranted given the limited edition nature of the Hertz/Hendrick ZL1 and the low production volume. The car is also remarkably low mileage for a rental. I wish the new owner all the best with their new Hertz ZL1 Camaro! This is definitely a Special Edition car to be cherished and enjoyed, preferably on back roads with a heavy right foot!

Barrett-Jackson to Host Inaugural Houston Collector Car Auction

For more than 50 years, Barrett-Jackson has hosted its annual collector car auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. The auction has grown over the years into a multi-day event and has become the cornerstone of Arizona Car Week.

Now the auction house is expanding with the launch of their first ever Houston, TX auction scheduled for September 16-18, 2021. The auction will be held at the NRG Center in Houston.

This is not the first time Barrett-Jackson has entered a new metro area. The Scottsdale-based company launched auction events in Palm Beach, Florida in 2002, Las Vegas in 2008, Orange County in 2010, Reno-Tahoe in 2013, and the northeastern U.S. in 2015. In a statement, Barrett-Jackson’s CEO Craig Jackson said “The car culture runs deep in Texas, which is why we’ve had our hearts set on bringing an event to the state. The pent-up demand for collectible vehicles and the hobby in 2021, combined with the level of excitement we see at our inaugural events, will make this Houston Auction one that enthusiasts around the globe will not want to miss.”

The event is more than just a simple car auction. Barrett-Jackson will be kicking things off on September 15th with an invitation-only gala for registered bidders and VIPs. There will be an exhibitor marketplace during the event featuring vendors and companies centered around the automotive lifestyle.

Additionally, guests will have the opportunity to ride with a professional driver on the Barrett-Jackson Performance Track. Chevrolet and Ford will provide hot laps in their C8 Corvette and Mustang Mach 1, respectively. Toyota and Dodge will also be on site with Thrill Rides in a drifting exhibition featuring the Toyota Supra, as well as Dodge Charger and Challenger.

The sales commence on September 16th, starting with automotive memorabilia such as antique gas pumps, neon signs, and other decorations for the ultimate collector garage or man cave. Then, it’s on to the cars.

Barrett-Jackson specializes in postwar American muscle cars of the 1950s through 1970s, though their auction catalog includes everything from prewar cars to the latest sports and exotic cars. Here are some highlighted vehicles that will be sold at the Houston auction:

The Ford GT is an amazing, purpose-built, low-production race car for the road. While each of them is special, this one carries a high number of factory options that distinguish it from the pack.

RM Sotheby’s Monterey 2019 Auction Highlights and Results

One of my destinations during Monterey Car Week 2019 was the RM Sotheby’s auction, which was held at the Monterey Conference Center. I paid $40 dollars admission to view the auction cars during the preview hours.

While I couldn’t document every car in the catalog, here are some highlights from the Monterey 2019 auction:

1994 McLaren F1 LM

The McLaren F1 is considered by many to be the “Greatest of All Time” of the supercar world. Just 106 of these amazing vehicles were built between 1992-1998. Of those, only 64 were road legal, and of those, only two were upgraded by the factory to “LeMans specifications.” This is one of those cars. As if the regular F1 weren’t special enough, the LeMans spec gets an unrestricted 680 hp engine (up from 618 hp in the standard F1), and a High Downforce Kit (HDK) with a revised nose with front fender vents and a huge rear wing.

For a car spotter like myself, seeing this car in person was the equivalent of finding the Holy Grail. It was an absolutely stunning example and perhaps the most outstanding vehicle of Monterey Car Week 2019. On the auction block, the car’s high bid was $18 million, slightly below the estimate of $20 to $25 million. With the buyer’s premium, the final sale price was $19,805,000. Congratulations to RM Sotheby’s and to the new owner!

2019 McLaren Senna (Serial No. 434/500)

McLaren’s latest hypercar, the Senna, is the latest and greatest in its lineage of “Ultimate Series” cars, which include the P1 and the F1. The Senna is limited to just 500 units worldwide. This one, car #434, is painted in Victory Grey with Papaya Spark accents. The car’s twin turbocharged 4.0L V8 engine produces 789 horsepower and was designed as a track-focused design with minimal comforts and amenities. RM Sotheby’s Scottsdale 2019 Auction Results

While collector car auctions like Barrett-Jackson and Russo and Steele capture much of the media spotlight during Arizona Car Week, there are other auctions like RM Sotheby’s that cater to the true enthusiast. Though their catalog is much smaller at around 200 vehicles, I find that RM Sotheby’s offers a wide variety of classic and contemporary cars, each one of which is truly outstanding.

The following are some personal highlights of cars I spotted at their 2019 Scottsdale Auction, held at the prestigious Arizona Biltmore Resort. While I would love to do a feature on every car in their catalog, time simply does not allow such a luxury. I have chosen some of the cars that I feel represent the quality and selection one would find at an RM Sotheby’s event.

Lot #273 – 1957 Ferrari 250 GT Coupe Speciale by Pininfarina

Every Ferrari is special, but this one is really something to write home about! This 1957 250 GT Speciale is a one-off custom bodied car by Pininfarina that was built for Lilian, Princess of Réthy, the royal lady of Belgium. The car was appraised at $11 to $13,000,000 by experts, but it did not meet the reserve price, with the highest bid received of $7,500,000 according to Hagerty.

Lot #243 – 1948 Tucker 48

The Tucker 48 is today appreciated as an automobile that was far ahead of its time. Just 51 cars were ever built before production ended. RM Sotheby’s is no stranger to Tuckers. They sold chassis no. 44, the legendary Ohio barn find car, at the Scottsdale 2017 auction for $1,347,500. Chassis no. 29, Preston Tucker’s personal car, crossed RM’s auction block in 2018 for a handsome $1,792,500. Now in 2019, chassis no. 40, a beautifully restored blue car (shown above) sold for $1,600,000 (including buyer’s premium).

Barrett-Jackson 2017: Auction Photos

Barrett-Jackson returned to Scottsdale, Arizona for their 46th annual Collector Car Auction event, which was held from January 14-22, 2017. They sold a record number of cars, and raised nearly $2.2 million dollars for charity. In case you missed it, here are some photos that should give you a sense of what it was like to be there.

Barrett-Jackson 2017: Setting Records, Making Memories

This 1960 Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle sold for $1.3 million at Barrett-Jackson’s 2017 Scottsdale auction.

For 46 years, the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale has been the cornerstone event of what has grown into “Arizona Car Week.” I have been attending the Scottsdale auction for over 10 years now, and have covered the event on this site for 5 of those years. Usually, I recap the auction by writing about a couple of unique cars that caught my eye, or industry trends like Micro Cars, hot rods, and celebrity car sales. This year, I want to do something different and share some thoughts about the January 2017 auction.

Setting Records
barrett-jackson-sold-stickerThe Scottsdale 2017 auction was a record-breaker for Barrett-Jackson and for the collector car community. Consignments were way up this year, indicating that confidence in the market is on the rise.

The auction normally features 1,400-1,500 collector cars, and 2017 saw a jump to 1,719 vehicles on the docket! In fact, they actually started the auction a day early on Monday, January 16th, just to get through them all!

Here are a couple of highlights from the Scottsdale auction:

  • Over 320,000 people attended the 8-day event
  • Total auction sales (including memorabilia) were approximately $102 million
  • Cars in the auction had a 99.5% sell-through rate
  • The Charlie Thomas Collection featured 146 vehicles and yielded more than $1.7 million in sales
  • There were 8 Charity Auction cars, which raised a total of $2.28 million dollars for charities ranging from Military Veterans to Children’s Hospitals
  • The top charity car was Steven Tyler’s 2012 Hennessey Venom GT Spyder supercar which sold for $800,000, of which 100% of the proceeds went to Janie’s Fund, a program that provides support for abused and neglected girls
  • More than 36 hours of live auction coverage aired on Velocity TV and Discovery

You might think that after 46 years, the car auction business would be a humdrum event, but that’s not the case at all. Compared to other car auctions, Barrett-Jackson has the largest catalog of cars, the largest audience, and nearly half a century of experience, and they know how to generate excitement unlike anyone else. I think that is reflected by the record-breaking numbers in this year’s auction.

Making Memories
One of the hallmarks of the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction is that there’s so much to do. While the cars are the main focus, there were vendor exhibits, Dodge Thrill Rides, celebrity appearances, a Polo match, a BMX exhibition, and plenty of food options to create a full day’s entertainment each day of the event.

While all of these are great, my favorite part of the auction is walking around under the tents outside and looking at the different cars that have been consigned for sale. While I am out there, I see lots of other people doing the same thing. The love of cars is an interest that brings people together, regardless of age, income, or other factors.

Barrett-Jackson is not in the business of selling cars – they are selling dreams.

There are groups of friends both young and old walking around checking out the cars. I see best friends reminiscing about the cars they had in high school and the mischief they got into. Barrett-Jackson is not in the business of selling cars – they are selling dreams. Dreams of the car they always wanted, or the one they used to have that got away.

I see young kids whose eyes light up when they see a Plymouth Prowler or a gigantic supercharger sticking up out of the hood of a muscle car. This is the event to see all things weird and wonderful of the automotive world, from the Amphicar to a Ferrari Testarossa. You don’t need to know a single thing about cars to see something that stirs your soul, and Barrett-Jackson is the place where that happens. These kids are the collector car owners of the future. What they see at these events may start them down a path that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
