SEMA 2015: 1965 Mustang ‘Splitr’ by Ringbrothers

1965-mustang-splitr-profileAlong the banks of the Wisconsin River in the sleepy town of Spring Green, WI, there is a hot rod shop owned by two brothers. It is here that Mike and Jim Ring, also known as The Ringbrothers, create their unique brand of automotive art. These guys are one of my favorite hot rod builders, and I have featured their amazing work several times before:

1970 Mustang Mach 1: “Dragon”
1964 Fairlane 500: “Afterburner”
1965 Mustang: “Blizzard”
1971 Pantera: “ADRNLN”
1966 Chevelle: “Recoil”

Their latest creation is this heavily customized 1965 Ford Mustang, which they nicknamed “Splitr.” I saw it on display at the 2015 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

FFT: Pulling the 455 Top End

Amidst all of the 2012 SEMA hubbub, I bring you the latest installment on my 455 Oldsmobile-powered 1965 C-10, better known as: The Futuramic Farm Truck.

As you know this time of year is not a productive in terms of free hours to work or money to spend. I’ve been putting off breaking out the impact gun and yanking the top end on the 455 because I spun it over and checked the oil when I traded it for my boat anchor smog-era 350. I had some free time between trees, turkeys and all that other stuff to get a little bit done, so this is what I chose to do. Like my piece on the rear suspension for my daily driver: Valkyrie, I’m going to be doing this article in a captioned picture style to illustrate what was going on as I did it. Welcome back to the ongoing saga of my Oldsmobile-propelled, 1965 Chevrolet C-10, better known as the “Futuramic Farm Truck”. I want to go back to a post I made, following the bumpers I had for it. I probably should have asked my fellow 60-66 owners first, but being disillusioned with craigslist at the time (my love for it comes and goes), I scrapped them and made about $50 off the both of them. I promised I would post what I made off of them when I got rid of them, so there it is. I’m sure I could have made more had I sat on them a while longer, but I was tired of tripping over them every time I went to take out the trash, and I was going to recycle some other metals anyways. FFT: The Big Day

Let me start by saying that when I found out they made a longbed stepside for the 60-66 trucks, I wanted one. They’re super rare and reproduction parts are expensive to say the least, but I just like the way they look. They aren’t very well liked in the 60-66 community (like all long beds), but the guys that do have them, love them. I had convinced myself when I started this build that if I wanted one, I’d have to make one out of a short bed. A daunting task, but I added it to my list of things I would need to do to get the truck to where I wanted it. Thankfully, I have a craigslist addiction that knows no bounds. I found someone with a 1962 GMC long bed stepper (powered by a 305 v6 and a 3 speed manual no less) that wanted to trade for a fleetside. I emailed them immediately and we were both so excited to get what we wanted we scheduled the trade off for the next day.

What I didn’t know is that the wrap-around window 60-63’s sit on a different frame than the vent windowed 64-66’s. It took a little bit of convincing but eventually we finalized the even trade. One bed for another. Here’s the photographic tale of how it happened.
